Over one billion of world’s population is on the internet. Facebook has about 1 billion active monthly users whereas twitter has about 500 million accounts worldwide. But in my opinion, twitter is more important than any other social network. And this holds good for everyone. If you’re a brand or just an individual or a blogger, politician or a media person, a tech enthusiast or an art patron, twitter is your best friend online.
Twitter is your daily dose of what’s happening in the world and is your key to popularity online. One can come across a lot of posts, events, jobs and news in their field of interest just by looking up for a hashtag. Without wasting much time, one can glance their field of interest and all the happenings in very less time. There are two things that make twitter unique.
First, the trends. Trends on twitter are not just based on hashtags but also on words used in tweets. So it’s not just the hashtags that trend but words, names and places can trend too. A lot of times I’ve seen words and places trend on twitter for no reason. The trend here is just the word. It’s just that so many people are using this particular string of characters in their tweets. The most interesting thing about a trend is that it can be used. Twitter lets you see only trends relevant to your region. You can get tailored trends based on your location. One can see exactly what’s trending in their city or country. The best thing about these trends is that one can use them. A person or a brand can ride on these trends by using the hashtag in their tweets and get attention on twitter.
Here’s just a random example I found today. Today was Sankranti, A Hindu festival. So the word ‘Sankranti’ was trending in India. And Comedy Central, a comedy TV channel, used the trend to get more attention on twitter and promote their show.

Another very important feature on twitter is the limit on the number of characters for every tweet. Twitter has a limit of 160 characters per tweet. However one can use links and images which are again shown as links. These links will be shortened to 22 characters by twitter. The advantage of this is that one doesn’t waste much time reading through the entire story or seeing the entire image or video. If what’s tweeted is interesting, one can continue to the link or media. This gives more scope to the usage of creativity in tweets. To reach out more, one has to use the given 160 characters wisely and tweet so that it interests people and they go ahead to view the link or media.
Twitter is for the stuff you wanna know in the world and for the stuff you want the world to know. Basically using twitter completely depends on wise usage of 160 characters and the use of right trends or hashtags to get more attention. With this simple formula and a little creativity, you can get more attention on twitter for you or your brand or your organization.
